Deborah Catterall

Deborah is a teacher, recitalist, conductor, member of The York Waits, healer and writer. She studied at the Royal Northern College of Music, Huddersfield University and the Royal College of Music. As a student, she twice won the National Early Music Competition (UK). In more recent times, she was vocal tutor at Chetham's Specialist Music School in Manchester and was also a Musical Director for The National Youth Choirs of Great Britain. She is currently in charge of choral teaching at Higham Hall Educational Trust and is Lead Tutor for their Early Music Summer School. As a singer, Deborah has recorded several commercial CDs with The York Waits and has duet partnerships with lutenists, Hugh Cherry and Richard MacKenzie. Her conducting has taken her to amateur choirs, Liverpool Renaissance Singers and her chamber choir, Voci. She teaches privately both in person and online and writes on the healing properties of singing for various publications, in particular, The Art of Healing in Australia. In 2005 she was invited to Buckingham Palace in recognition of her services to The British Music Industry.

Session 1
Vocal warm ups and Sing Your Part!

A look at how to effectively warm up and find a reason for singing a choral part on your own at home. We will explore the Kyrie from Missa Papae Marcelli (1562) by Palestrina, in depth, looking at the context, the man and the sublime beauty, coming together as one offering, through this glorious piece.

Here is a choice of songs in their original keys. They are all by John Dowland, taken from his various books of ayres. If you are intending to book for a lute song class, please select one of these, make your booking and go to your classroom where you will find music and accompaniments to download. Session 5
Qigong & Voice Work:
Co-presented with Gaynor Gaynor.

Qigong is a form of energy work that balances and stabilises breath and energy flow throughout the body. Coupled with voice work, it can open doors to freer, more grounded and also more vital singing. This session is recommended for anyone interested in exploring vocal work in a new subtle and clearly guided way.
