Hugh Cherry
Hugh studied lute, archlute, theorbo and viol at the Guildhall School of Music in London, going on to perform with many early ensembles, both as a lute continuo player with groups including the Academy of Ancient Music, and as a viol player with the English Consort of Viols and The Rose Consort, of which he was a founder member. He taught Lute and Continuo for ten years at the Royal Northern College of Music, and recently retired as lute tutor from Chetham’s School of Music.

An Introduction to Dowland’s Lute Songs:
Pre-recorded video talk (non – interactive)
This presentation gives a brief overview of John Dowland’s songs and compares briefly, the twelve nominated for lute song classes for today’s retreat. This will be of interest to anyone curious about the world of 16th century lute songs but particularly for those attending the interactive lute song classes today. Included in the talk are performances of parts of the songs to illustrate the points made about style and song development.

Lute Song Classes
Here is a choice of songs in their original keys. They are all by John Dowland, taken from his various books of ayres. If you are intending to book for a lute song class, please select one of these, make your booking and go to your classroom where you will find music and accompaniments to download. This class is for five participants and two tutors. You will receive guidance on singing and style, with encouragement from all class members. Dowland’s songs are exquisite, deeply meaningful and the work of a genius.
