Michael Piraner

Michael has a Diploma of the NSW State Conservatorium of Music, A BMus degree from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music where he studied recorder with Owen Watkins and an MA in Music from the University of Birmingham.

He moved to London in 1991 where he studied recorder with Anneke Boeke at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. From 1998-2001 Michael held the position of recorder teacher at Newcastle Conservatorium of Music in Australia.

He has performed in the UK, Australia, The Netherlands, France, Germany and the USA. Michael performs and gives workshops regularly with Polyphonica Recorder Trio, and he has his own annual series of workshops in Seaford, East Sussex, as well as a busy private teaching practice.

Apart from the paid sessions shown below, Michael is making available some
free recordings of Polyphonica Recorder Trio for your enjoyment during the breaks.

Rhetoric & Music

An introduction to how ancient classical ideas of rhetoric and oration influenced composition and performance in the renaissance and beyond.

This would be of interest to those intending to participate in the Articulation for Recorder Players session but applies to players of any instrument and singers.

Session 2
Articulation for Recorder Players
11:00 - 12:00 BST
Have you ever wondered how to decide when and how to tongue when presented with a piece of music with no articulation markings?

Learn about the historical view of articulation, its relationship to spoken language and a few simple strategies that you can apply yourselves.

Need to prepare
No prior knowledge needed.

Please be prepared to play some simple and fun exercises.

Any sized recorder to play exercises.

Session 3
A view of Interpretation using Van Eyck's Daphne
12:30 - 13:30 BST

This will look at various musical elements such as rhythm, meter, harmony as well as articulation technique to provide you with the tools to create your own strategies for creating a convincing performance.

Need to prepare
Technically easy - based on the undecorated melody. A very basic understanding of harmony would be good but not obligatory. Versions for recorder players using either C or F fingerings in treble and bass clefs will be provided. Players of other instruments can use either.
